چکیده

Thermal diffusivity values of molten germanium and silicon were measured by a laser flash method. Simple but useful sample cell systems were developed to keep the molten germanium and silicon shape uniform for a given thickness. In the present experimental condition, it is necessary to consider the effect of not only the radiative heat loss but also the conductive heat loss at the interface between the molten sample and the cell material under the present experimental conditions. However, the computer simulation results suggest that the conductive heat loss is found to be negligibly small. The thermal diffusivity values of molten germanium and silicon are given in the following equations (unit: m/s).

Experimental investigation of size effects on the thermal conductivity of silicon-germanium alloy thin films.

We experimentally investigate the role of size effects and boundary scattering on the thermal conductivity of silicon-germanium alloys. The thermal conductivities of a series of epitaxially grown Si(1-x)Ge(x) thin films with varying thicknesses and compositions were measured with time-domain thermoreflectance. The resulting conductivities are found to be 3 to 5 times less than bulk values and v...

Confined in-fiber solidification and structural control of silicon and silicon-germanium microparticles.

Crystallization of microdroplets of molten alloys could, in principle, present a number of possible morphological outcomes, depending on the symmetry of the propagating solidification front and its velocity, such as axial or spherically symmetric species segregation. However, because of thermal or constitutional supercooling, resulting droplets often only display dendritic morphologies. Here we...

Thermal conductivity of group-IV semiconductors from a kinetic-collective model.

The thermal conductivity of group-IV semiconductors (silicon, germanium, diamond and grey tin) with several isotopic compositions has been calculated from a kinetic-collective model. From this approach, significantly different to Callaway-like models in its physical interpretation, the thermal conductivity expression accounts for a transition from a kinetic (individual phonon transport) to a co...

Enhanced in-plane thermoelectric figure of merit in p-type SiGe thin films by nanograin boundaries.

P-Type polycrystalline silicon-germanium (SiGe) thin films are grown by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) and their thermoelectric properties are characterized from 120 K to 300 K for potential application in integrated microscale cooling. The naturally formed grain boundaries are found to play a crucial role in determining both the charge and thermal transport properties of the fi...
